Shalane Flanagan

Did you know that four-time U.S. Olympian and 2017 New York City Marathon champion Shalane Flanagan was born in Boulder in 1981? Flanagan’s parents were both elite runners training in town at the time. (Her dad, Steve Flanagan, was a 2:18 marathoner, while her mom, Cheryl Trewogy, had previously set the women’s marathon world record in 1971.) Flanagan earned a silver medal in the 10,000-meter run in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, placed 9th in the marathon at the 2012 Olympics in London (2:25:51) and finished 6th in the marathon at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (2:25:26). Flanagan continued her success in 2018 with a 6th-place finish in the Boston Marathon (2:36:14) and a 3rd-place finish in New York (2:26:22). While Flanagan hasn’t lived in Boulder since she was about 4 years old, she did place second in the 2007 U.S. Cross Country Championships that were held on Boulder’s Flatiron Golf Course.
