Dave Mackey

Boulder trail running legend Dave Mackey endured a horrific accident on Bear Peak in May 2015, when the two-time U.S. ultrarunner of the year suffered a badly broken lower left leg that required 13 surgeries and months of rehab. It never fully healed, so Mackey decided to voluntarily amputate part of the leg in 2016. He returned to action with a prosthetic leg in 2018 and completed all six events in the Leadville Racing Series—a trail marathon, a 50-mile mountain bike race, a 50-mile run, a 100-mile mountain bike race, a 10K run and a 100-mile trail run—to earn “Leadman” status for the second time. He finished the 100-mile run in 24:54 and placed 12th among 100+ Leadman competitors. Dave was inducted into the Colorado Running Hall of Fame in 2018. (Photo: Brian Metzler)
